Saturday 9: The Champion

Saturday 9: The Champion (2018)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about doing what it takes to win. What's the most recent competition you won? (Yes, online solitaire counts.)  Ha! You must have been peeking. I play several different versions of solitaire online. And tonight's win would be my most recent.

2) The lyrics tell us to "go ahead and put your bets on me." Do you often play games of chance -- like the office football pool, or slot machines, or the lottery?  Not all the time, but I'll usually throw in a dollar at work when there's a football pool; buy a lottery ticket when the jackpot is ridiculously high; and I might get to the casino once a year to pay the penny slots...with an occasional splurge on the quarter slots.

3) The video includes footage of young people competing in The Special Olympics. What's your favorite sport to watch? Is it the same sport you most enjoying playing?  I mostly watch football, but I do enjoy figure skating and gymnastics when they are on. I don't play or participate in any of those.

4) This week's featured artist, Carrie Underwood, first came to America's attention when she won on American Idol. Prior to competing on that show, she'd never been on an airplane. How old were you when you took your first flight?  Seven or eight in a little single engine thing that a friend of my parents flew.

5) Carrie loves horror and her favorite author is Stephen King. What book are you currently reading?  I'm not reading anything. I just finished a Christmas romance. I need to pick something else tomorrow to read during my break at work.

6) Carrie's duet partner on "The Champion" is rapper Ludacris. In addition to making music, he acts and has appeared in one Sam's favorite shows, Law & Order: SVU. What's your favorite "cop show?"  Probably Law & Order: SVU. I think we watch it more than anything else.

7) Ludacris is a distant cousin of comedian Richard Pryor. Have you studied your family's genealogy?  Extensively.

8) Soccer was a big deal in 2018, the year this song was released. According to Google, "FIFA World Cup" was the news story that generated the most internet searches. What's the last thing you "googled?"  I'm not sure, but I'm sure it was something to do with my Christmas shopping.

9) Random question: You're battling the flu. The doctor advises you to stay in bed a full five days. As you begin feeling better (around Day 3), do you continue to follow doctor's orders? Or do you get up and start moving before you're supposed to?  If I know me, I'd get up and end up overdoing it enough to land myself back in bed for the last couple of days.

Thanks for sticking around to the end. If you enjoyed it, you can join in the Saturday 9 fun for yourself right here.

  1. Interesting answers. You said you have done some family history research. I am also interested in family history and have done some work on mine, which was interesting because I was adopted as an infant, but found my birth family when I was in my 20s. I had my DNA done last year and that was interesting but really didn't reveal anything new, but genealogy and family history is fascinating. Fun post. Have a good weekend!

    1. My son did one of those DNA tests through Ancestry.com last year and it connected him to people it said were his first cousins. He gave me the names and that forced my mom's hand. After 54 years she finally told me the name of my biologic father. It put things in motion in his family, too. Since then I have been communicating with my newly discovered half-sister and we met in October. I hope to communicate with at least one of my half-brothers (the other is, according to the family, a little odd and sort of withdrawn from even them) and in the last month I've begun corresponding with my father. We plan to meet next summer when he returns from wintering in Texas. It has been one surreal experience.

  2. My cousin Rosemary is fanatic about genealogy. It started with ancestry.com and culminated in a trip to Poland to view handwritten birth records in small town Catholic churches. I wish I could benefit from her adventures, but we aren't blood relatives (my grandmother married her uncle when my mom was young). Anyway, it's her passion and she loves it. Turns out she's DISTANTLY related to the Royals through Princess Diana. On her dad's side. Which amuses me, because her dad's hobby was to sit on the pier, smoke and drink beer. I don't see him having much in common with his Cousin Di. :)

    1. I've been lucky in that I didn't have to do much with the direct lines in either my grandmother or my grandfather's family tree as someone had done it. I am trying to find the documentation for one ancestor. Everyone knows he exists, but unless I can find some documentation for him, I can't be registered as an official descendent of John and Priscilla Alden. That's my big goal. Of course finding out about my birth father has opened up a whole other line to look at.

  3. I have three casinos within an hour drive, Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, and MGM; the last time that I visited them to gamble was probably a decade ago.

    1. We have a couple that are an hour or so away and by spring there will be one about 15 minutes away. I'm sure I'll go once to see it and then never again. We only visit the one in Erie when we are up there for a getaway.

  4. My husbands brother (took DNA testing as well) and I are actually working together to solve their mothers mystery adoption...and we have uncovered some unpleasant things...none the less, interesting to say the least.

Have a great day, friend. smiles

    1. I can imagine! I saw that both Ancestry.com and 23andMe have had to start up huge counseling departments to help the people who find out deep, dark family secrets. Sheeeesh!

  5. I'm enjoying Christmas rom-com books! Kindle unlimited has a bunch that are linked with my Audible account, so I end up listening to them.

    1. Ah, that sounds awesome, but the audible account is another monthly bill isn't it? I'm already paying for Prime and then unlimited music.

  6. I am not one of those who disobey the doctor. I stay in bed as long as it takes. I have studied my genealogy extensively and was very surprised to find out that I am related to European royalty. And at one time my family had a lot of money. What happened to that? Wish they had saved some for me.

  8. Fun questions again this week. As you know, I have enjoyed the DNA results and Ancestry.com. No royalty in my line so far. "We" have been in the USA since the 18th century and before so if there is a royal connection somewhere, it is WAY back. I am excited that you will be meeting your father this coming summer!

    1. I just got another letter from him yesterday, Terri, and I nearly cried. He opened up a lot more and he sounded proud of me and my life...something my mom and dad never did. Their praises always came with a dig. He is really excited about meeting me!
