Wednesday Medley

Hi! I hope you are all snug and toasty wherever you are...it doesn't seem like many places in the U.S. are able to lay claim to that right now. It was 25 degrees about 4 hours ago when I tried to go to Bible study, got caught in a white out, decided to turn around, and slipped, slid, and fishtailed my way back home (50 minutes to drive about 8 miles round trip). The weather man says it will be in the low teens by morning with windchills in the single digits. Believe me, I know it could be worse, but this is still crazy cold for the middle of November.

Anyway, since I will be busy trying to thaw out my car tomorrow morning so I can get to work on time, I'm linking up early with the Wednesday Medley. Katsumi has recruited her friend, the famous Spewgie, to host while she is away. Please pay a visit to link your own post or find links from other bloggers.

1. Sadie Hawkins' Day. Also known as Turn-About Day. On this date in Dogpatch, Judge Hawkins declared a race between the town's eligible bachelors and the spinsters (including his daughter, Sadie) with the prize being matrimony. Nowadays celebrated as a day on which the girl asks the boy to the big sock hop. It's celebrated in November? Huh, go figure. My school always celebrated it in February. I guess they were celebrating it and Valentines Day together.

For those of us who are single: Any special plans? Is a restraining order and a monitoring anklet hampering you from finding true love?
  N/A

For those of us who are in a relationship: Do you have any words of encouragement for the single ladies? If you want to be happy in a relationship you have to let go of the notion that any one person can be your everything. Nobody is perfect and nobody can live up to that. If you can't let it go you're going to make the other person miserable and you're going to end up a shrew. Advice on removing a monitoring anklet?  Yeah, don't end up with one in the first place!

2. Today is Indian Pudding Day. Colonists to America substituted cornmeal which they called "Indian flour" in their recipes for hasty pudding. Indian pudding fell out of favor in the late nineteenth century with its long cooking time.

Are you a crock pot, electric / gas range, microwave cook? Or do you go to restaurants or order take-out / delivery?
We get a lot of take-out during the week, I do like to use my crock pot. It's nice to just drop everything in, go to work, and come home to a hot meal already cooked.

Bonus question: Vanilla ice cream is listed as an optional topping. Is it really optional?  A topping for what?
I guess I'd call it optional...I eat ice cream and like it but it's not something I ever crave. I like vanilla ice cream with any warm dessert.

3. National Education Support Professionals Day recognizes the unsung school heroines: Bus drivers, cafeteria ladies, secretaries, crossing guards, custodial workers..
.

Anyone special to whom you want to give a shout out?  The list would be too long. Up until last year I worked as a school bus driver. I know how hard they work and all the crap they have to put up with...and I know they depend on all those other people.

4. Dear Santa Letter Week. Remember writing to Santa Claus for a doll or a book or credits to Google Play to download MP3 songs and apps to your smartphone?
Maybe a little. I think I mostly circled the things I wanted in the Sears Wish Book and left that for Santa. Besides, the closest thing to a smartphone when I was a kid was Captain Kirk's communicator.

Now we are adults and understand the true meaning of Christmas. What did you wish for when you were little?
A horse. And did Santa ever bring one? No he did not. Did you sit on Santa's lap at the department store for a photograph? Oh yes. Mom still drags out one of those acrylic photo cubes with the proof every Christmas. What do the little ones in your life ask Santa to bring?  We have four grandchildren. The oldest was not allowed to believe in Santa; the next after her is a bit "high maintenence" so he asks for a lot of stuff; the two youngest are too little to ask just yet.

5. Happy 20th Birthday, Lando Norris! Lando is a Formula 1 race car driver.

Who took you out on the road when you were learning to drive? My husband, my mom, and my grandmother. I didn't get my license until I was 22. Long story. Did your road test with the examiner go smoothly? Yes, it did. It probably helped that I was older than the state trooper testing me and I had my son in a car seat in the backseat. I always joke he passed me out of pity. lol What was your first destination driving solo? I really have no idea. Probably just to a store or an appointment.

Bonus question: Ever dream of driving a race car? Nope. Or a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500® with the Predator 5.2L 32 valve V-8 DOHC engine capable of producing 760 hp and 625 ft / lb of torque? I've never dreamed that specific, but HECK YEAH! I am all about Mustangs. Someday I'm going to own one. I hope.

6. Please share with us something interesting about your week.
With all this cold and snow there isn't much going on this week, but Saturday is our 35th anniversary. Wow. The years sure have flown! Anyway, we don't have any big plans. We will probably go out for dinner or something, but the cruise we went on back in the summer was our big anniversary gift to ourselves.

  1. Ooh, Stacy, that sounds like a very white-knuckled 50-minute drive. Slick roads are what I dislike most about winter.

These are always such interesting questions. Who know there were so many days to celebrate?!

Santa Letter week. I must say that I was shocked to see that Santa is already at our mall. He must have gotten there over the weekend, maybe even last week. That's insane! It used to be that Santa arrived the day after Thanksgiving, but now he arrives 3 weeks BEFORE.

Stay warm, and stay safe on those roads. And Happy anniversary!! Wishing y'all many more wonderful years together.

    Blessings,
    Patti

    1. I haven't been to our mall...lots of the stores are dying out and by next spring a casino will have moved in to one of the anchor spots. Everyone thinks they will start filling the mall with entertainment venues and restaurants to go along with the casino. Anyway, they had light-up night on the 8th so I'm assuming Santa is there, too.

  2. 35 years??? That's so awesome!
Oh man... waiting for that Sears catalog... that was a true sign of Christmas getting near, wasn't it? I think I circled EVERY SINGLE THING in that - at least all the girl toys :)

    1. I was a tomboy and usually circled quite a few "boy" toys, too.

  3. Totally true about people - you can't be everything but you can both work to be your best for each other.

    1. Thank you, and yes, being a school bus driver was less and less fun every year.

  5. Happy Anniversary! Glad you didn’t get stranded in that weather and made it home safely. Life stops here in Texas whenever we get snow or ice. Not that it happens very often.....

    1. Thank you, and yes, we saw that kind of reaction to the weather when we lived in Florida. It was like the end of the world!

  6. I hate driving in snow - probably because we don't often have to so it's always scary. Congratulations on your anniversary. I hope you enjoy celebrating it.

    1. Thank you! I'm not a big fan of driving in snow, but I've learned to handle it pretty well over the years. It's just that when there's ice on the road there isn't much you can do.

  7. Congratulations on your 35th Anniversary!

It isn't as much hosting as babysitting. Bunny has all the questions written and ready to go until spring of 2022. Whoever gave her that job should have known better.

Nice to meet you. Wish it could have been under pleasant circumstances.
