Saturday 9: Secret Love

I'm sitting here (late Friday night) listening to the rain on the roof. It is really pouring. I hope that, for once, the weatherman is correct and the rain won't last that long or amount to much. This is my weekend off and I really need to get the grass mown and pull the weeds in the garden and flowerbeds.

Well, while I'm waiting to find out what the weather will do, I'm linking up with Sam and the gang for the Saturday 9.

Secret Love (1953)

Unfamiliar with this week's song. Hear it here.

Rest in peace, Doris Day (1922-2019)

1) In this song Doris admits she's spoken to the stars, "the way dreamers often do." Do you often daydream?  Not so much these days, but I did when I was younger.

2) What's the last secret you kept? (It doesn't have to be romantic.)  It's apparently been a long time since I've had to keep a secret, because I can't think of one.

3) While "Secret Love" was one of Miss Day's best-selling records, and the song won an Oscar, she did not perform it at the Academy Awards Ceremony. She said she was just too nervous to sing it live before an international television audience and an auditorium full of entertainment professionals. When did you last suffer an attack of nerves?  I'm thinking it must have been last summer when I had the interview for my job. It had been years since I'd last had to endure an interview and my boss is not exactly a warm and welcoming person who puts others at ease. I know I stammered my way through it. Since my boss never seems to act like she thinks I'm all that competent, I figure I got the job because of my connection to my boss in the dementia unit.

4) Doris' well-publicized attack of Oscar stage fright was unexpected because she began her career as a band singer, performing before live audiences every night. But she reportedly did develop more phobias over the years, including a fear of flying. Is there anything that scares you now, as an adult, that didn't frighten you as a child?  I don't think I had a fear of anything happening to my grandchildren back then (nor any thought that I'd one day be a grandparent), but boy, that's a fear now.

5) Doris Day made 39 movies between 1948 and 1968. She said one of her favorite things about filmmaking was working with costume designers on her wardrobe. Do you enjoy shopping for clothes?  Not particularly. I like it better now that I do most of it online.

6) Doris confessed that when she had to lose weight for a role, she gave up ice cream. If we checked your freezer, would we find any ice cream?  Not at the moment and when there is some in there, it's usually my husband's. I'm not that big of an ice cream fan. Even in summer I don't eat that much of it.

7) In 1985 she hosted a cable show called Doris Day's Best Friends. She used the show as a platform to promote pet adoptions and animal welfare. Most of the guests were  celebrity friends who reportedly donated their salaries for appearing on the show to Doris' pet foundation. Did you more recently ask a friend for a favor, or perform a favor for a friend?
I rarely ask my friends for favors, but I'm always willing to do one for them so I probably did something for one of them.

8) For more than 20 years, Doris co-owned the Cypress Inn in Carmel, CA. The Inn expects to continue on without her, and maintain the pet-friendly policies she introduced. Have you ever traveled with your dog or cat?  No. I'm too worried about taking them far from home and having them get loose and then not being able to find them.

9) Random question: What's the last thing you complained about?  All the rain we've been getting.

  1. #8 -- YES! Exactly! I'm sure Doris ran the pet-friendliest inn on earth, but my critters shall remain safely home bound.

  2. I never had that much love for ice cream until the past couple of years - I discovered Tillamook! And we have never lost a pet while traveling, but I think if my dog got away from me in a strange place, it would truly be grievous. We leave her with a petsitter and I've always been concerned that she might get away from them.

  3. I can't eat ice cream and haven't had any since I was 11. A big hot fudge sundae complete with whipped cream and a cherry on top is actually on my bucket list. Ha. Thank you for not traveling with pets. It is very hard on people like me. I have to avoid hotels that take pets, which basically leaves me with Hampton Inns.

  4. I get worked up over interviews as well. We have the rain moving in later today... hopefully the hubs will get finished working on his car before it hits! Have a great Saturday!

  5. I could never take our cats in the car... mainly because they were so nervous, but yes, I can imagine them running away adn neveer seeing them again. That would be horrible!

  6. Yes, interviews are difficult at best! I used to hate them and always felt that I was behaving like an idiot no matter what I did.

  7. Oh interviews are terrible for me. I have to do my deep breathing for those too. We have rain on the radar and we are under a tornado watch...oh goodie! The last tornado round brought 29 tornado touchdowns. We were under a tornado warning all evening. It is really still outside and humid right now. I have my dogs out so they will not be out in it later. I loved your answers! Have a great weekend!

  8. The last interview I had was conducted by phone ... by a robot! Since I'm the type who stammers and prattles while leaving a voice-mail, you can imagine how badly that went. Glad I'm not the only one who's not terribly fond of ice cream!
