Saturday 9: Waiting for a Star to Fall (1988)
Unfamiliar
with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) "Waiting for a Star to Fall" was literally inspired by a falling star. The singing/songwriting duo of Boy Meets Girl was at a big, outdoor concert and could have sworn they saw a falling star in the night sky. Have you ever seen a falling star? On one of the mission trips I took to New Mexico and Arizona I saw a lot of them. The sky is amazing out there where there is no light pollution.
2) They offered this song to Whitney Houston, who declined to record it. Whitney did have hits with two other songs they wrote: "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" and "How Will I Know?" What's your favorite Whitney song? Those are both okay, as is "I Will Always Love You." I don't really have a favorite as I wasn't particularly a Whitney fan. I liked her music, but didn't get excited about it.
3) Boy Meets Girl were George and Shannon, a husband-and-wife team originally from Seattle, WA. In 2016, Seattle was named America's most "bike-friendly city." Do you own a bike? Not at the moment, but Tim and I have been talking (a little) about getting bikes and taking advantage of some of the bike/walking trails in the area.
4) George and Shannon met for the first time at a wedding. She was a guest, he was in the band. Think of the last wedding present you bought. Was it from the bride and groom's registry? No. The last wedding gift I gave was the wedding itself (and cash in a card) for our daughter.
5) In 1988, when this song was popular, 98% of American homes had a TV set. Today, that figure has dipped to 96%, presumably because Millennials are watching more content online. What's the last video you watched online? I watched an episode of the Lawrence Welk Show with the residents at the nursing home tonight while the aides were getting them ready for bed.
6) In 1988 saw the introduction of one of the most memorable slogans of all time: "Just Do It." Without looking it up, do you know what brand "Just Do It" promotes? You bet your Nikes!
7) In 1988, Sonny Bono went from entertainer to Republican politician when he was elected Mayor of Palm Springs. Have you ever met the mayor of your town? Right now I don't even know who the mayor of my town is, but no, I don't think I've ever met any mayor.
8) Michael Douglas took home the Oscar in 1988 for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street. The American Film Institute named Gekko one of the "top movie villains of all time." Do you think bad guys are as interesting as good guys? Oh, they make movies entertaining, but more interesting? Not really. It's pretty easy to be bad. I find it more interesting to learn how someone can keep their honesty and integrity and be a kind person in today's world with all its pressures to be bad...and all its acceptance of all things bad.
9) Random question: Have you ever seen a photo of yourself naked? (Baby pictures don't count.) Nope and I don't really want to. Ever.
I'm linking up with Sam @ Saturday 9 for some musical fun today. Pay her a visit and find links to the others playing along....and feel free to join in the fun yourself!
The wedding itself is a very nice wedding gift. ;)
ReplyDeleteI hope you and your husband get those bikes. Sounds like a great way to welcome spring.
I am hoping to get our bikes out this year and go ride the trails. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to convert old railroad lines into bike/walking trails. There is one near me that runs almost continuously from New Haven CT to Northampton MA and Bed & Breakfasts are opening along the trail. One place open an ice cream shop next to the trail... my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI am not really a Whitney fan either. I think I like I will always love you because it is Dolly's song. I prefer Dolly's version too.
ReplyDeleteThat is great about the bike's! I need to get some exercise. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

Hope you get the bikes. Sounds like a good way to bond and spend time together as well as exercise!
ReplyDeleteYes, if you can get away from all the city lights, watching the night sky is a wonderful experience! It's getting harder to find a really dark area these days. Even though we live "out in the country," we still have too much light to see many stars.
ReplyDeleteHappy Saturday!
Oh, and you should get those bikes!
I'm with you about Whitney--not particularly a fan. It was like she was always shouting. meh.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a Whitney fan but she had a beautiful voice. I enjoyed your answers and a couple of them matched mine. Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteI listed the same song for Whitney.. It was the only one that came to mind but I did like that song! Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteWe finally bit the bullet, and before moving, gave our bicycles to Tom's son and DIL. No more guilt! (LOL) I'd love to watch your residents' expressions while watching Lawrence Welk … that show was a fixture in my growing up years.
ReplyDeleteA great answer to #9. I still love the Lawrence Welk show, wouldn't have missed it when I was a young girl. I wanted to grow up and be a Lennon Sister. :o))
