Saturday 9: It's a Jungle Out There (Theme from Monk) (2003)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) This week's song is the theme from the detective show that ran from 2002-2009. Were you a fan?
I've never seen it. I know it's still on in reruns, but it's just not one we've ever turned on.
2) The song warns us about the air we breathe and the water we drink. Does your home have an air or water filter?
No. Oh wait....we have ice and water in the door of the refrigerator and that water is filtered. There's a filter in the furnace and I put a filter in the air return for the central air. That's as filtered as our air gets.
3) The lyrics say, "People say I'm crazy to worry all the time." Are you a worrier? Or do you just take things as they come?
For the most part I am a take it as it comes, easy going type of person, but even I have my worry triggers.
4) TV's Adrian Monk is known for his outstanding deductive powers, an homage to Sherlock Holmes. Have you read any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books featuring Sherlock Holmes?
I think I read one years ago. I'd much rather watch Robert Downey, Jr. play him in the movies.
5) Monk was also known for fastidiousness and precision, an homage to Hercule Poirot. Have you read any of Agatha Christie's books featuring Poirot?
I tried to read one years ago and just couldn't get into it. I should try to read one again.
6) This song was written and performed by Grammy and Emmy winner Randy Newman. Do you have any trophies or plaques?
There are a few still hanging on my mom's walls. All the ones on display in my home are my husband's.
7) Before winning an Oscar in 2001, Mr. Newman had the distinction of having the most nominations (15) without a win. Do you consider yourself a graceful loser?
Yes...at least on the outside. I'll admit I might be upset now and then on the inside, but I would never show it.
8) In 2003, when this song was introduced, Lance Armstrong won his fifth Tour de France. Later, he was disgraced in a doping scandal. Can you think of a time when a hero disappointed you?
I was disappointed in Dan Rather when he got busted for not checking the facts on a story and running with what turned out to be a false story. I think that was the moment when I lost the last of my respect for the media. If one of the last legends could cheat, what did that say about the rest? I was also disappointed when football great, Dan Marino, was caught cheating on his wife. I had really believed he was one of the good guys.
9) Random question -- We're catering lunch. Should we put you down for a burger or a taco?
There's a 2015 movie called Truth about the whole Dan Rather/Mary Mapes affair. It's far more complicated than we were led to believe back in 2004. Just because the documents were faked doesn't mean that what they said wasn't true.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, it's a very complicated tale about a complicated story, and news moves so fast today that people move on before the entire saga unfolds. Even if you want to hang on and follow the whole thing, there are many twists and turns. But to boil it down, just because Dan Rather didn't do his due diligence doesn't mean the content wasn't accurate. And it wasn't so much that he cheated as he showed bad judgement and trusted the wrong people. Rather resigned, taking the hit and accepting responsibility for his staff, as team leaders should. Of course, the irony is the original news story was likely true, only sloppily and deceptively sourced.
Sorry to take up so much space on your blog. It's just that he did behave with a certain level of integrity, so if you want to investigate it further you may find that one of "the last legends" didn't cheat.
I've never heard of that movie. I'll have to look for it. I can believe that's what happened, but it wouldn't restore my faith in the media. It's become all about ratings, breaking the story first, and that can (and does) encourage sloppy reporting and a lot of conjecture. It's a far cry from what I was taught about reporting.
DeleteI hate that news journalists have been replaced by entertainers--that the talking heads are hired to analyze the news instead of reporting it. :(
DeleteI absolutely have no respect for the "talking heads" news hosts from here and there. Plenty of respect for Dan Rather, though.
DeleteThe news is like anything else these days...all that matters is the bottom line, the money. I'm still disappointed that Dan didn't check sources and gave into pressure. I guess I'm a bit of an idealist...wanting reporters to be about the truth/facts and nothing but the truth/facts and that's just not how the world works.
DeleteYikes that reminds me... clean out the air filters on my furnace. I haven't done it in months
ReplyDeleteI'll do that next month ahead of having to run the furnace.
DeleteYou are right, we do have a filter on our refrigerator for the ice and the water in the fridge, but I usually just grab a drink from the tap and we do have filters in our air return...nothing extra though.
ReplyDeleteMonk is really good, it is a funny show if you like comedy, but also has mystery thrown in there too. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend!

I think they show Monk on Cozi TV so maybe I'll check it out one of these days.
DeleteWhat Diana_CT just said!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about losing respect for today's media. So blessed I didn't pursue my degree in journalism!
… now I'm craving tacos!
I stopped regretting that I didn't finish my journalism degree a long time ago. I couldn't play by today's rules.
DeleteI love tacos but try not to eat them in public, I usually end up making quite a mess.
ReplyDeleteI feel that way about ribs and corn on the cob.
DeleteI also urge you to seek out the other side of the story on Dan Rather. He handled that with integrity, much more than CBS did, I must say. I was more disappointed in CBS than I was in Rather.
ReplyDeleteCBS is a corporation, and interested in it's bottom line. Which. at that moment, was ON the line..
DeleteI agree with you on that, Zippi.
DeleteI forgot about the filter in our refrigerator's water/ice dispenser. I enjoyed reading your answers. I have never been able to finish a book by Agatha Christie either. What's wrong with me? I don't even want to try again.
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I guess I just find those books a little too dry and old-fashioned for my tastes.
