Splurging on the Wednesday Hodgepodge

Good morning! I'll be heading out soon for a girls' day with a friend, but I wanted to link up to the Wednesday Hodgepodge before I leave.  Whatever your plans for the day are, I hope you are blessed by them!

1. What happens to the mail at your house?  When it first comes in the house it gets tossed on the kitchen island, then depending on the degree of organization happening each day, it either gets read and sent to the trash or bill file...or as is too often the case around here, it languishes for a couple of days on the island before I deal with it.

2. Something you always splurge on? Any guilt associated with the splurge?  If you've been around here long enough, you know the answer is books. I will always splurge on books. Guilt? Not usually unless I visit Barnes & Noble and buy a bag full. Most of my book purchases are either one at a time online at on sale prices or at used book sales, yard sales, etc.

3. There are many, but what are two important questions you think every bride and groom should ask/answer before they plan their walk down the aisle?  1. They should definitely discuss their financial goals and how they intend to handle money.  2.  They should discuss how they intend to keep their marriage relationship a priority and formulate a plan.  3. I know you only asked for two points, but if they are Christians, they'd better discuss that and make sure they are on the same page about what that means to them and their marriage, future family, etc.  To me, that's the biggest thing that should get talked out, but not all couples getting married are practicing Christians so obviously it wouldn't be a big point for them.

4. What's the best advice your father ever gave you?  It's a toss up.  It's either "If something is worth doing, it's worth doing well." Or "If you don't have something nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all."  Cliche, but most cliches become cliches because they are excellent bits of wisdom that bear being repeated.  And those two bits have served me well...at least when I've heeded them. I hate to admit that wasn't always the case.

5. Your favorite movie where a father features heavily in the storyline?  John Candy's hilarious old movie, The Great Outdoors, is a favorite around here and has been since the kids were little. We also like RV with Robin Williams.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  I'm not really having any "big" random thoughts this morning so here are a few small ones.

  • Part of today's outing is getting another Deva Curl cut. I haven't had one since December. I'm thinking of going a lot shorter. I haven't totally decided about that or a hairstyle.
  • The kids are totally moved out of their apartment and staying in my mom's house until they close on theirs. Closing is still set for the 18th.
  • My hubby is getting his knee operated on next Wednesday.
  • The Navajo people are near and dear to my heart. It's been a long time, but I went on two mission trips to the Navajo reservation and the people just touched my heart in a special way.  So, I was very excited to learn that Beth Moore and Living Proof Ministries visited the native peoples last year in Chinle, AZ and plan to go back again this October. Many Native Americans struggle financially, but you can provide scholarships for them to attend the conference in October for just $25 per person! Just visit the site to do so.
Well, I had better be off and get myself ready or I will end up being late to meet my friend. Thank you for stopping by and have a blessed day, my friend!

  1. Loved RV! Your father gave you great advice - those are two things everyone should carry with them.

    1. I didn't always agree with him when I was growing up, but as I've aged I've gained an appreciation for the things he taught...if not the ways he taught.

  2. I wish I'd paid more heed to your #3(3). It's not a bone of contention, per se, but disquieting to say the least.

Blog buddy Sandra (MadSnapper) had a great take on the U.S. mail: She wishes the mailbox had a little buzzer the carrier could sound if her delivery contained Actual.Real mail!

    1. And that #3 can be a problem if one partner changes where they stand (in either direction) after the marriage.

My mom was a rural carrier and on her own mailbox she had a little yellow flag that was released when the carrier opened the box. It didn't let you know you had "real" mail, but it did let you know the mail had come.

  3. Oh, a girls' day with a friend. How fun! I have one of those looking at me tomorrow.

I agree with you that for Christians getting married, their faith is probably the most important item to discuss. In answering that question myself, I made the assumption that they had already talked that out and were equally yoked.

I don't think it's possible to ever have too many books!! I do like the library, but I like having a healthy library of my own at home too.

    Blessings,
    Patti

    1. I stick to my thinking that "it's not hoarding if it's books!" LOL

  4. I haven't been on your blog since the last HP, but I just hopped over and read an update on the kids move/house situation. As someone who is a well organized list maker and well married to king of the de-clutter I still stay moving is soo stressful. Add in all the other things they're dealing with and bless them. I do hope it's smooth sailing from here on out. So much is out of your control when dealing with banks and mortgages, etc that you just have to keep your eye on the future and picture yourself about three months down the road. I'm glad you're able to help them out. Also-you can't have too many books!

    1. I don't know why that extra well is in there as in 'well married'. I mean I guess I married well, but that word was dropped in by mistake : )

    2. I think we are finally getting to the light at the end of the tunnel. They are out of their apartment and staying at my mom's. Barring anything unforeseen by them or the bank, closing is on track for the 18th.
