Saturday 9: Back in the USA

It's a great day to hide out in the air conditioning and play along with the Saturday 9. Comcast is still out due to the "cut fiber." So no television and it's to be at least 95 and humid as Hades today...what else is a girl to do? (Okay, so there are lots of other things, but I'm doing this first.)

SATURDAY 9: BACK IN THE USA (1978)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) This song lists seven cities -- New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge and St. Louis -- that Linda just loves. How many have you visited?  Of that list, the only one I've been to is Chattanooga. It was a lovely city, but I was there in July and it was hot and humid. Blech!

2) The lyrics refer to hamburgers sizzling on the grill. What toppings do you believe make a perfect burger?  Lettuce, tomato, cheese, and ketchup. And maybe bacon every once in a while.

3) The original recording of this song by Chuck Berry has always been one of Linda Ronstadt's favorites, one she used to enjoy singing along with in the car. What's the most recent song you sang?  I just discovered a new radio station the other day when I saw it advertised on a billboard. I know I was singing along, but for the life of me, I don't remember what songs.

4) Linda sang The National Anthem at Game 3 of the 1977 World Series. The New York Yankees won both that game and the series. How is your baseball team doing this season?  I don't follow baseball. The Pirates are the local team, but I have no idea how they are doing.

Since this is our last Saturday 9 before Independence Day, let's ask some questions about the holiday.

5) During the Revolutionary War, General Washington celebrated the 4th of July by giving his troops a double ration of rum. Will you imbibe any spirits on Independence Day?  It's possible, but doubtful.

6) The first man to sign the Declaration of Independence, John Hancock, said he wrote his name so large King George could see it, even without his glasses. Do you require glasses for reading?  I require glasses for everything. I have since I was 7.

7) Since July 4 is a federal holiday, banks are closed and there's no mail delivery. Thanks to email and ATMs, Sam finds going without those services isn't a hardship. What about you? Will you find it inconvenient that banks and the USPS are closed on July 4?  I never have before, so I don't see why I would this year.

8) The first 4th of July parade each year is held at 12:01 AM in Gatlinberg, TN. Will you attend a parade or fireworks to celebrate the 4th?  If I can get anyone else to go with me, I'd like to take our youngest grandson to the parade in our town. It's the biggest one in the area. There's also a carnival that runs all week and after dark on the Fourth there will be fireworks, but my husband has to work the next day so we won't go to those....plus we'd have to hike quite a way from where we'd park and his knee isn't ready for that.

9) More and more Americans celebrate our nation's holiday by eating foods from Italy and Germany. For the July 4, 2016 holiday, more than $50 million was spent on Italian sausage and bratwurst. What's on your 4th of July menu?  I have no idea. I don't know if we're doing anything special or not.

  2. Your answer to #6 could be mine. I've needed corrective lenses for so long that I can't recall waking up without either glasses or contacts.

    1. If I were braver and if we had vision insurance I'd give LASIK a whirl. I know some who are thrilled and don't need glasses even for reading afterward and then there's my aunt, who did not get what she hoped for. She had to wear reading glasses right after and within a year, I'd say, she was right back to wearing glasses all the time.

  3. Glad I'm not the only one with no firm plans for the holiday. Here's a link to a private youtube video of me playing the guitar, since you asked: https://youtu.be/bPwSh7Twdno. I guess you can view it.

    2. I've only watched the LOTR trilogy once so I'm not familiar with the song, but that was lovely! Thank you for sharing it! I am always in awe of those with musical talent since I have less than zero and wish I did.

  4. The last time I was in Chattanooga was when I was knee high to a grasshopper. We visited all the Civil War battlefields.

    1. And I didn't see any of those. I was there for a conference so didn't get to do any real sight seeing.

  5. I enjoyed your answers Stacy. A couple of my blogging friends live in or near Chattanooga so we usually stop on our way to visit family in Ohio. I would love to spend a couple of days there (in the Fall) seeing the sites.

    1. That would be nice. It's a beautiful area, but I was there in July. Ugh! I didn't get to see much, either, since a group of us drove down to Kay Arthur's campus to get trained in Precepts bible study.
