Saturday 9: Standing on the Corner

Saturday 9: Standing on the Corner (1956)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, four friends congregate on Main Street to look longingly at pretty girls. In your town, where is the best place for people watching?  Walmart. Seriously. This is still a small town and while we don't really get "People of Walmart" weird, if you go to Walmart you are bound to see everyone you know sooner or later. Other than that, I'd say wait until August and then take in the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp. All kinds of people come to town by the thousands. (They turn up at Walmart, too!)

2) This song was written for the Broadway musical, The Most Happy Fella. Who is the happiest person you know?  A guy I work with gets that honor. He is such a goof. He drives the rest of us crazy at times with his really stupid jokes, but he sure amuses himself and never lets anything get him down.

3) The members of The Four Lads met at Toronto's St. Michael's Choir School. Growing up, did you attend parochial or public school?  I went to public schools and a private school, but it wasn't parochial.

4) The Four Lads always wore jackets and ties when they performed. Do you enjoying dressing up? Or would you rat
her keep it casual?   Every once in a while it's nice to dress up and feel glamorous, but on the whole, I'm a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl.

5) While this song was a hit for The Four Lads, they were completely overshadowed in 1956 by Elvis Presley and "Heartbreak Hotel." Who do you think dominates today's music scene? I'm the wrong person to ask about that. I don't really keep up with popular music the way I did when our daughter was still at home.

6) The Wizard of Oz aired on TV for the first time in 1956. Sam was never crazy about those flying monkeys. Tell us about something that frightened you when you were a kid.   Well, the witch in the Wizard of Oz sure did.  I wasn't crazy about the dark, either.

7) What scares you now?   The thought of ending up old and alone or of something happening to one of the grandchildren.

8) Since this week's song is about pretty girls: 1956's Miss America was Sharon Ritchie of Colorado. Today Colorado has the distinction of being the home of more microbreweries than any other state in the union. Which are you most particular about -- your beer, your wine, or your coffee?   I don't drink beer (with the once in a while exception of Corona) or coffee (as in never, ever), so I guess it would be wine.

9) Random question: We all have small, irritating habits, like soup slurping or not replacing the cap on the toothpaste. What's your nasty little habit?   Biting my nails when I am stressed or bored.

Linking up with Sam & the gang at Saturday 9.

  1. Another non-coffee drinker! I think we're a cult, or maybe a very exclusive club. There certainly aren't many of us over age 12.

    1. Let's be an exclusive club. I so often feel like I'm NOT part of the club with the coffee drinkers at work.

  2. I only dress up for those fundraising banquets where you get rubberized chicken for an outrageous price.

    1. And I avoid fundraising banquets so that tells you how much I get dressed up. I don't even get "dressed up" for church.

  3. We've just discovered how affordable Wal-Mart really is ... you're right about the smorgasbord of humanity! Everyone - from the employees to other shoppers - seems really friendly.

    1. It depends. I love them for household stuff and packaged food...nobody beats the prices. However, I usually buy produce and meat at my regular grocery store. I have a thing about Walmart's meat coming from who-knows-where and already packaged and sometimes the produce is not the greatest at our store. When I take advantage of the online shopping, I don't buy produce because they invariably pick stuff that is a day from expiring or bruised to death, but I LOVE the shopping for non-perishables!

  4. I bite my nails too. I have tried everything to stop but nope. So I have given up stopping. I do keep them clipped really short which helps keep down the biting, but I still bite them.

    1. I stop all the time, it's usually stress that brings it on. This winter, though, it's been because they've been in horrible condition ever since I had 3 gel manicures leading up to our daughter's wedding last fall. That process left the layers peeling and splitting and it doesn't seem to stop. Maybe warmer weather and my skin and nails not being so dry will finally do the trick. I hope so.

  5. I didn't even think of WalMart--but it's really the only store in the area other than locally owned grocery stores.

    1. I don't want to like Walmart, but they have everything and most of the time you really can't find a better price.

  6. I bit my nails something terrible growing up, but after I got married, I stopped without even realizing it until one day I noticed my nails actually had tips. Now I just bite my lips. It is a scary thought to think about growing old alone or something happening to one of the grandchildren.

    1. I don't bite these days unless I'm stressed or bored (and in thinking about it, what I'm calling boredom is usually during stressful times). It is scary...I can't really imagine anything worse than those two things.

  7. I agree, every once in awhile, it's nice to dress up and feel glamorous. But I like the comfort of casual, though casual to me in summer is a sundress and sandals. I'm not much of a jeans person. I never like the dark as a kid, and worse---my bedroom closet was the one that led to the attic. Any little kid knows dark attics are homes for monsters! Now, I like it to be totally dark when I sleep. No night lights for me.

    Blessings,
    Patti

    1. I guess, in honesty, I'm not a jeans person these days, either. I am all about leggings...long, short, capri. I love the comfort of them and I only wear them with tunic length shirts. I don't like seeing the girls who wear them as pants with short tops or the girls who wear the tunics without leggings. In my thinking if you have to walk yanking your dress down to keep your girly bits covered, it's not a dress, it's a shirt!

  8. This was a fun Saturday 9. I enjoyed reading your answers! I have to admit that I am not the coffee drinker I used to be. If I don't get a cup on any given day, it's okay. Happy weekend, Stacy!

  9. OMG- I totally forgot about Walmart. And even better, there is a Walmart to people watch at just about everywhere!

    1. Right?? We usually don't get "People of Walmart" weird here, but you can still see some pretty unusual stuff now and then...like girls walking through (pretty, nicely dressed girls) chewing snuff and spitting into empty pop bottles. I've never even seen a guy doing that IN Walmart. In the parking lot yes, but not inside.
