Saturday 9: The Addams Family

Thanks and a big shout out for this week's fun questions goes to Sam @ Saturday 9!

The Addams Family (1964)
Unfamiliar with this week's song. Hear it here.

1) One of TV's spookiest families was inspired by a series of New Yorker cartoons. What's the last magazine you flipped through?  I flipped through an issue of Better Homes & Gardens during some down time at work on Friday.

2) The Addams' butler, Lurch, was originally conceived as a mute. But then actor Ted Cassidy ad libbed the line, "You rang?" and Lurch had a voice, and a catchphrase. Can you think of another catchphrase connected to a TV character?
Of course. My favorite character from my favorite show...Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory...Bazinga!

3) Now here's the most important question of the week: Do you prefer The Addams Family or The Munsters?  I watched them both (and still do if I catch them in reruns), but I'd say The Munsters edge out the Addams Family. Grandpa and Herman have always cracked me up. We even have a rather expensive latex mask of Herman around here somewhere that my son wore on more than one Halloween.

4) What's the scariest movie you've ever seen?  It's hard for me to rate them when I really don't do scary movies. I don't enjoy them at all.

5) Thursday was Halloween.
What goodies did you give the trick or treaters? Some mix bag that had peanut butter cups, Kit Kats, Jolly Ranchers, Whoppers, and a couple of other things.

6) Are you attending/have you attended any Halloween parties this year?
  Nope and nope.

7) Did you carve a jack o'lantern this year?
No

8) Do you eat candy corn all year around ... only at Halloween ... or never?
  NEVER!!!

9) In 1964, when The Addams Family premiered, one of the most popular store-bought Halloween costumes was Bambi. It came with a plastic mask held on by a thin elastic band. Tell us about a memorable Halloween costume from your childhood.  My mom was the librarian for all the schools in a small district when I was a little girl and one year the staff made paper mache masks. Big, ugly, gloriously monstrous masks! Mom's was sort of a bride of Frankenstein thing with shredded newspaper curls, painted on scars, and huge botox-worthy sparkling ruby lips. It was amazing. I loved it and begged to wear it many times over the years (Mom still has it!). The first time I got to wear it I was walking in the local Halloween parade and I remember hearing people commenting on it. I thought I was really hot stuff and I did win a prize!

    1. Mom still has that thing in a box in the attic. I saw it a few years ago and it has faded and I'm not sure how it would go over today, but then I watch all those collecting shows and I bet someone out there would go nuts over it.

  3. Since my Addams post went into thin air...lol...We handed out Butterfingers, Baby Ruths and Nestle. I got pretty annoyed with the teenagers who took big handfuls-ran. Well, they pretty much cleaned us out. These teens make things so much worse than they need to be...anyways--I enjoyed your answers. Have a great day...and maybe one day you will post a photo of that mask, grin.

  4. It seems like most of the Saturday 9ers don't like horror movies.

  6. My dad was the drama director at the high school and would come up with fantastic costumes and makeup for me and my sisters. Of course, access to the prop room helped.

  7. I don't watch scary movies -- don't like being scared. The Munsters always wins out over the Addams Family. I would love to see that mask your mom made. It sounds amazing!

  9. I use to love Big Bang. But the pairing off & the death of Howard's mother, well I thought it jumped the shark. I see it now and then & will watch the finally. It's still incredibly funny and well written. I hate "Bazinga" tho...

  11. Paper-mache masks? What a novel idea! I'd LOVE to see a picture of that someday. This year I bought Butterfinger and Snickers because I don't like them at all and won't be tempted like last year when Tom bought Reese's. Go figure, we didn't have one trick-or-treater!
