Saturday 9: (Dear Mr. Gable) You Made Me Love You

(Dear Mr. Gable) You Made Me Love You (1938)

Unfamiliar with this week's song. Hear it here.

And join in the fun here.

1) This version of "You Made Me Love You" is the teenaged Judy Garland's fan letter to Clark Gable. Tell us about one of your teen crushes.  Oh goodness, take your pick. I was a real fan-girl during my teens. The walls of my room were plastered with posters and photos of all the cute guys...Shawn Cassidy, Andy Gibb, John Travolta, Erik Estrada, and many more. Toward the end of my teen years MTV was just taking hold and the New Wave of music from England was taking the states by storm and I tended to like those guys...Billy Idol, Adam Ant and some good old American "bad boys" like John Cougar Mellencamp.

2) Garland sang to this to Gable at a birthday party thrown for him at MGM. Who is the last person you sang "Happy Birthday" to?  One of the residents at work. The activity staff sings to every resident having a birthday.

3) Thinking of birthdays ... Judy received an engagement ring from the man who would be her first husband, David Rose, for her 18th birthday. Are you wearing a ring, or any jewelry, as you answer these 9 questions?
  Yes, my wedding ring.

4) It's said Judy's favorite dish was steak and kidney pie. If you could have anything at all for dinner tonight, what would you choose?  Something with shrimp or crab, but I'm planning to make either a pot of chili or a pot of soup.

5) Judy was ambidextrous, writing with her left hand but playing tennis with her right. Are you equally comfortable using your right and left hands?  No. My mom writes left-handed but does everything else right-handed.

6) To relax between takes of her most famous movie, The Wizard of Oz, Judy read comics in the newspaper. Do you still read a printed newspaper?  When my husband brings one home. We stopped subscribing a few years ago and only pick one up now and then.

7) She could also knit. Judy was known to make blankets and caps for the children of crew members on her films. Do you knit?  No. I wish I could, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it.

8) In 1938, when this record was popular, the March of Dimes founded. Do you have any dimes in your wallet (or pocket) right now?
I don't think so. I don't have cash on me very often. I usually just use the debit card.

9) Random question: Catsup puddle next to your fries, or a drizzle of catsup on your fries?  Beside, beside, BESIDE! I consider my fries ruined if you put the ketchup ON them!

Posting on Friday evening because I'm off this weekend and I'm going shopping with my daughter and granddaughter in the morning.

  1. Hmmmm. Seriously good thinking.

I wonder what would happen if I was to walk around with nothing but American Express and VISA gift cards? I mean I basically just carry a couple of credit cards. Even in the drive-through at Burger King.

My co-workers use their credit cards for Mt Dew Code Red and Cool Ranch Doritos in the vending machines! And downtown parking meters and ramps take credit cards, too.

What would you spend change on? There aren't anymore payphones. And a gift card has got to be safer than a credit card.

I think I will give it a whirl.

  2. Gift cards are probably safer than credit or debit cards. Some say credit cards are safer than debit cards but I don't know...my mom's card seems to get hacked regularly.

  3. It is time to make crock-pot full of both chili and onion soup to freeze for the winter.

  4. My husband is making a pot of chili for today as it is quite chilly (ha, that rhymes, lol).

Have a great day shopping. I will be working on writing papers, smiles.

  5. Ah-ha! I can answer why credit cards are safer than debit cards! You’re right, it has nothing to do with the tap/swipe technology. It’s the same for both cards so they’re equally easy to hack.

It’s the liability you face. By federal law, you CANNOT be responsible for more than $50 fraudulently charged to your credit card. Many bigger banks waive that altogether. (Citi has done it for me.) No such protection exists for your debit card or checking account. The bank is allowed to hold you responsible for every penny that comes out of your checking/savings.

Many larger, national banks handle both cards the same way, but smaller banks and credit unions OFTEN don’t. They’re not necessarily bad guys. They may not be able to afford to. The funds in checking and savings accounts are considered deposits and should be available for withdrawal at all times – even if every, single customer decides to grab their cash at the same moment (think of that scene in It’s a Wonderful Life).

So the wisest thing to do is to call the number on the back of your debit card and ask your bank what their policy is. If it’s the same for debit and credit, no reason to make a switch. If it’s not, you may want to consider getting a new credit card specifically for day-to-day purchases and pay it off every month.

And that card shouldn’t be AmEx or Discover. They aren’t accepted at as many locations as Visa or Mastercard. I could explain that one, too, but this is already long and you may have dozed off by now. (Can you tell that I write about financial services for a living?)

PS I tend to share my change with the homeless, street musicians and tip jars. I worry about what happens to those people if we go 100% paperless.

  6. PPS Please know that gift cards are usually the same as cash and offer no protections. Really, read the back and save yourself some heartache.

  7. We were just so surprised that our youngest granddaughter at age three recently picked up the crayon with her left hand and just went to town. She now writes and colors very well left handed and she isn't 4 until January..I mention that because I know of no other lefty in either of our families. She may bit a ambidextrious.. She is very hands on with everything! I am definitely right sided in everything!

  8. I am the same with Heinz being beside the fries. BESIDE. I don't even know how to eat them drizzled.

  9. I pay cash for almost everything. If I don't have the money, I don't buy it. I agreed with you on the ketchup.. on the side, not on top.

  10. You like the bad boys! Those are some good choices.
I also do not like ketchup on my fries. It must be beside. Loved your answers! Have a great day!
