Saturday 9: Money for Nothing

Well, this should be fun. I loved today's song and video when it came out. Thanks for a great trip down memory lane, Sam! Head over to the Saturday 9 site to find links to other players or to join in the fun for yourself.

Money for Nothing (1985)

Unfamiliar with this week's song. Hear it here.

1) Sweatbands are prominent in this very 1980s video. What's the last thing you wore on your head?  My glasses are always on my head. Except when I'm sleeping. Other than that, it would be a hair clip.

2) The lyrics are from the point of view of a man who delivers and installs appliances. What's the biggest purchase you've made lately? Was it big in size or expense?  If the cruise we just went on counts, it was definitely that both in size and expense. Otherwise, it was the loveseat I bought back at Thanksgiving. It has power recliners on both ends, a console in the middle, and plugs to charge your phone, computer, or whatever.

3) The delivery man of the song imagines the worst thing that happens to a musician is a blister on his little finger or thumb. Do you have any minor aches or pains bedeviling you as you answer these questions?  My left knee and hip bedevil me all the time these days.

4) The term "dire straits" describes a troubling situation that's difficult to extricate oneself from. When's the last time you found yourself in dire straits?  It's apparently been a while because I can't think of anything.

5) There's a dinosaur called masiakasaurus knopfleri. It's a prehistoric, predatory lizard, and the paleontologists who discovered it were big Dire Straits fans, so they named it after lead singer/guitarist Mark Knopfler. Do you find dinosaurs fascinating, terrifying, or both?  Mostly fascinating, because they're extinct and it's so hard to imagine anything that big stomping around. Now if they were still walking/swimming/slithering/flying around I'd be terrified.

6) Prior to his music career, Knopfler was a junior reporter, covering the entertainment beat for the Yorkshire Evening Post. Do you believe you would make a better musician or journalist?  Well, I'm very glad Mark Knopfler chose to be a musician. He is arguably one of the best guitarists to ever play and I've always enjoyed his music. That said, I'm sure he and the rest of the world are equally glad I studied journalism and not music.

One of my favorite Knopfler songs.

7) In 1985, when this song was popular, rib eye steak was $3.89/pound. Today it's more than twice that. Do you have any beef in your freezer right now?  I think there might be a roast in there. There is mostly chicken, pork, and seafood in the freezer.

8) In 1985, Michael Jordan won the NBA Rookie of the Year award after his first season with the Chicago Bulls. It was the beginning of a career that made him a hero and a household name. Who do you think today's young people look up to?  Someone I've probably never heard of.

9) Random question: Friends take you to dinner for your birthday. The menu you're handed doesn't have any prices on it. Do you try to estimate the costs and choose what you guess is the least expensive entree? Or do you figure that since your friends want you to have a good time, you should order whatever you want?  If they chose the restaurant, I'd assume they were aware of what they were getting into, and choose something I like...but not be greedy about it.

  1. Masiakasaurus knopfleri is only six feet tall. I looked it up.

If anyone tried to name such a puny little dinosaur after me I'd have refused the honor.

I am more the triceratops or T Rex type.

  2. #5 Brought to mind that poem: "Little birdie in the sky, you did something in my eye..."

  3. I enjoyed your answers. I like the band Dire Straits, especially Money for Nothing song. My son when he was little, use to sing that at the top of his lungs, lol. He use to giggle over the "chicks for free"--like I told him, "Sweetie you will learn that chicks are not for free". lol

  4. Love me some Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler as well. My favorite song from the album (Brothers in Arms) is the titular song. Sad, but gorgeous. I also love the cover. That 1937 National resonator is just stunning. Have a great weekend!

  5. I hope you feel better soon. I didn't realize how much my leg/knee pain depleted me until it was over. Really, those aches can suck the life out of you!

    1. Some days they surely do. I got the number for a friend's doctor. I'm going to try her out. I'm pretty much done with my current PCP.

  6. I've started using my cane all the time and am amazed at what a difference in makes in the back/knee pains. Doesn't get rid of them, but they are oh so much more bearable.

    1. I have tried using a cane when my knee is especially bothersome or I'm worried about falling, but I can't seem to get the hang of it.

  8. Both of my hips hurt with arthritis and my back at times. It stinks getting older.
If I had written this today, my hair thing would have been a scrunchie. I wrote you back that I never stopped wearing them. They are easier to get out of my curly hair.
No joke about who the kids look up to! Loved your answers! Have a nice Labor Day weekend.

  9. I've not heard of Knopfler, but really enjoyed this clip.
Even with prices printed on a menu, I'm likely to ask my host(ess), "What do you recommend?"

    1. Glad you enjoyed the clip. I'd be afraid the hostess would recommend the most expensive thing.

  10. There's a lovely music soundtrack called Local Hero that Mark Knopfler did, one of my favorites.

  11. Gettin' old ain't easy, that's for sure. You might ask one of the PT's at your place of employment (assuming there are some) about use of a cane. There is a trick to it. Most people use it on the same side as the hurt leg, but you actually hold it in the other hand. Put cane and bad leg forward, then move the good leg forward, then cane and bad leg, and so on. It does require a bit of practice. I had to use one for several years but fortunately no longer need it except on hills and steps.
