Bravery, Crazy Nights & Celebrity Crushes

It's Sunday and it's my weekend off, that combination means I'm linking up with Bev, our hostess, for Sunday Stealing. Thanks, Bev, for digging up the questions for us week after week. You do a great job finding interesting ones.

Questions from One Direction Asks

    1. Name three things you love about yourself.  I'm forgiving of others, I can find something to be grateful for in nearly every situation (and both of those first two things give me a lot of peace and calm), and I'm a loyal friend.

    2. What’s the bravest thing you ever did?
It was probably either touching a really, really big snake or preaching a sermon at church. Snakes and public speaking are two things that throw me into a full blown panic. I will say that I've done enough of the speaking now to have reached a certain (not particularly high) level of comfort with it. The snakes? Well, I'm not sure that will ever get better.

    3. Talk about the craziest night of your life.
I guess that depends on what kind of crazy you're talking about. If you mean wild, crazy partying times with friends...I have no idea. There were so many of those in my college days. I was a bit of a party girl back then. If you mean crazy as in circumstances, it was probably the night back when the kids were little that we spent huddled under the kitchen table while storms raged outside. At one point during that long night we watched the storm unwind the steel walls of our (then) brand new above ground pool and then twist and whip it around in the air just outside the kitchen window.

    4. Name three things you want in life.
      Health, purpose, love.
    5. Who’s your biggest celebrity crush?  Kyle Chandler. I've had a crush on him since he was on the show Homefront back in the early 90's. I think he's a terrific actor. He has won an Emmy and has been nominated a few times. He just doesn't seem to get the attention I think he deserves. He's been on several shows: Tour of Duty, Homefront, and Friday Night Lights to name a few. His film credits include: Pure Country, Mulholland Falls, King Kong, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Zero Dark Thirty, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Manchester by the Sea. And excitement...he's in the upcoming Catch-22 with George Clooney! He's a family man, married to the same woman since 1990-something and he likes dogs. He is definitely crush worthy!

    6. What’s your most common mistake?
I don't know that it's a "mistake," but procrastination comes back to bite me. All.The.Time.

    7. Which three things would you save if there was a fire?
Other than people....my dog, my journals, and photographs. Anything else is just stuff that doesn't matter and can probably be replaced.

    8. What’s your favourite sport?
I love to watch Pittsburgh football! Skating and gymnastics are fun to watch, too. As for participating, I used to be pretty athletic and played several sports, but not these days. I walk as much as I can. I like to ride a bike, but don't do it very often. Surfing the internet is probably the "sport" I participate in most. Ha!

    9. Talk about something good that recently happened to you.
I took my daughter with me to a basket bash yesterday. It wasn't a cheap afternoon. $20 each for the ticket and lunch, another $20 each for extra tickets, $10 for 50/50 tickets, and $20 for tickets for the high-end drawings. I didn't win anything. She won a gift certificate for a restaurant. At the end, she handed it to me and said "Happy Mother's Day."

    10. Which fictional world would you want to live in if you could?
I can't think of any. I'm not really into fantasy, sci-fi, or anything with an alternative world.

    11. What’s one thing you can never say no to?
Requests to babysit our grandson! Okay, and any chance to go to a flea market, yard sale, or auction.
    12. Talk about a childhood memory.  When I was growing up I'd go spend part of every summer with my grandparents. My Nana was the one I had the mother/daughter bond with rather than my mom. I loved horses and going riding. There was a place near Nana's that I could pay $5 and ride the trails for an hour. I did it so often they didn't even send an employee out with me.

One summer it wasn't open so Nana arranged for me to go riding at one of her neighbor's home. They had horses, but also a new pony that was used to walking in circles for pony rides at fairs and such. They had so recently got him that they didn't have a saddle yet, but figured a smaller horse saddle would be fine. And it was, until I grew frustrated by the fact that the pony wouldn't do anything but walk in circles. No matter what I did, he just went in a circle.

Enter Nana being helpful. She yanked a big old stock of mustard weed out of the ground and gave the poor pony a good crack on the butt. The pony took off like he was tied to a rocket and there was no stopping him. When he finally came to a stop the saddle, and me, were hanging under his belly. I crawled out from under there and gave up on riding for that year.

    13. Name five things you find attractive in others.
Honesty, a sense of humor, trustworthiness/integrity, availability (so many are too busy for other people these days), and kindness toward others.

    14. Are you good at making final decisions or do you easily change your mind?
Once I make a decision that is usually it.

    15. Name three guilty pleasures of yours.
Silly, little cozy mysteries...hunting for collectables and treasure at auctions, flea markets, thrift shops, and yard sales (it's not like I need more stuff)...Lindt Lindor chocolate truffle candy bars.

  1. I wish Kyle Chandler worked more. First of all, he's yummy, but in an accessible way. (I often see men on the el or at the ballpark who remind me of Kyle Chandler, not so with Brad Pitt.) And he's talented. He was wonderful as the big brother in Manchester by the Sea and as the husband in Carol. (And now I know he likes dogs!)

    1. Wow! It's rare to find anyone else who even knows who Kyle is. He does seem accessible and down to earth, though he is sexy in kind of an old-fashioned Cary Grant sort of way.

  2. I spent the summers with my Grandparents and I too had a much stronger bond with my Grandmother than my mom. My Granie taught me how to spend money, how to check out books at the library. I also got my fair share of learning how to garden with my Grandfather. My mom did not put that kind of time into me. My dad did. I think that is why my bond was so much stronger. Loved your answers! Have a nice day!

    1. It sounds like you had a wonderful grandmother, too. I'm glad for both of us. I hope I'm even half the grandmother she was.

  3. Lawdy, just the mention of snakes gives me the heebie-jeebies. Your narrative about Nana and the pony cracks me up. Have you ridden since?

    1. Oh yes, many times! I was just totally over that particular pony.

    2. If I had a cool pony that ran around in circles I would have practiced bareback riding and ran away from home and joined the circus.

It's like they always say: When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.

Then find someone to whom life has handed gin.

    3. I didn't think of the circus, but that would have been a great idea! Hmm...I was probably about 10. I don't think my friends were in possession of gin just yet.

  4. I'm loving the answers to these questions this week! The pony story was funny, if terrifying for you!

I didn't realize Lindt had candy bars. I only see their individual truffles. We visited the Lindt factory in Cologne. They were quite stingy with their samples! But I love their truffles.
