Saturday 9: You Make Me Feel Brand New (1974)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

Welcome to the first Saturday 9 of 2019!

1) As 2019 kicks off, what are your hopes for the brand new year?  I hope for health and happiness for all of my family. I hope to get serious about losing this extra weight and getting myself healthier (working in a nursing home can scare you half to death!). I hope to be better at managing my time.

2) Just because an item isn't brand new doesn't mean it isn't valuable. Have you scored any fabulous finds at a second hand store or website?  Many times. I love spending time scouring second hand stores, flea markets, yard sales, etc. I'm a bit leery of buying second hand online....I want to see what I'm buying BEFORE I hand over my money. I also am not a fan of meeting up with unknown persons to make a purchase. You just never know these days. Our town has a couple of "safe" places designated to do that, but it's not for me.

3) This song is sung by The Stylistics, a group from Philadelphia. Have you ever been to Philly?  My mom says I was there to see family as an infant. You couldn't prove it by me. Odd since we live in Pennsylvania, but I've never even been near it.

4) This song was co-written by Thom Bell, a Philadelphia-based musician/producer who was born in Kingston, Jamaica. The average daily temp in Kingston in January is 87º. Do you have plans to get away this winter and go somewhere warm?  I don't...and that makes me rather sad.

5) The Stylistics took their choreography very seriously. As you can see from the video, they even carefully synchronized their hand movements. Do you use your hands much when you talk?  I do, but it is proportional to how "excited" I am about the subject. The more passionate, angry, etc., the more the hands fly.

6) The lyrics tell us that the singer is grateful for a friend who will walk with him along a path that "sometimes bends." Looking back on 2018, tell us about a time that life's path took a bend you didn't quite expect.  I really did not expect to end up working at a nursing home. Leaving bus driving behind, yes, but in no way did I ever imagine where I'd land.

7) In 1974, when this song was popular, Chicago's Sears Tower opened and was for years the world's tallest building. Its elevators can carry you to the 103rd floor in approximately a minute. When were you last on an elevator?  Hmmm....geez, I have no idea. I'm pretty small town, I guess. LOL

8) Also in 1974, the 55 mph speed limit was imposed nationwide. When you drive, are you careful to stay within the speed limit? Or do you have a led foot? I'm careful to stay within 5 mph of the speed limit in known speed trap areas. Other than that, I miiiiiight have a wee bit of a lead foot.

9) Random question -- It's time to pose for your Saturday 9 yearbook picture. Will you show us your right profile, your left profile, or will you look directly into the camera?  I guess I'd look directly at the camera. I don't like my profile that much, but I also don't really care at this point in life so I'd just look at the camera because that's what I've always done.

Working again this weekend so I'll catch up with you Saturday evening!

  1. Is the nursing home all on one floor? I had thought that you'd be in elevators all the time at work.

I understand your reluctance to buy secondhand online. My niece convinced me to try ThredUp and both she and I have had only good experiences there.

    1. Yes, the nursing home is all on one floor. It's wide and sprawling.
I've not heard much about ThredUp. I'll have to look it up.

  2. I love discovering 'hidden treasure' I didn't even know I needed! Love your response to #1. Even retired, I'm lousy at managing my time.

    1. Yes, that happens quite a bit, but I'm trying to cut back on that as the house has more than enough stuff in it. LOL
Time management is NOT one of my gifts. How I wish it was.

    1. Yep, I just don't even care any more. One of the good things about getting older...being comfortable with who you are!

  5. I wouldn't mind visiting Philadelphia but it's not high on my list of places to go. We tend to avoid cities. Too much traffic. I can barely deal with a crowd in Walmart. LOL. I'm glad your life has taken such an interesting direction. You sound like you're enjoying your job and so long as that is the case - bravo!

    1. I don't mind visiting cities, I guess...as long as I'm not the one who has to navigate...but cities aren't high on my list, either. Pittsburgh is the only one I don't mind and that's only because I know it fairly well. At least until they close one of the tunnels or something.

  6. My wife has a weight problem (So do I but it's that I am losing weight not trying) she did the operation a few years before we met in 2010. She has gain back most of whats lost. But she started a diet. I never thought she'd do it. She said my medical problems & how I'm dealing is inspiring. But here is the main point. I don't care about her weight. She's my lady. I am sure the people in your life feel that way about you. Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks, Bud! I don't think anyone that matters cares, but I want to do it for me. I don't want to end up in a nursing home or worse and I want to be able to keep up with my grandkids. Congrats to Kathy for starting her own journey and how wonderful that you inspire her...and accept her as she is. :)

  7. I enjoyed all your answers, Stacy, including your comments to the comments. You are so good at responding to those who leave a comment (I'm terrible about it). About getting older and not caring so much... I agree and even quit wearing makeup two years ago. I am who I am... LOL

Thank you for the kind words.

  8. I like to think of stores like Goodwill etc as recycling things. I've gotten some good stuff and have donated some good stuff.
