Think (1968)
Unfamiliar with this week's song. Hear it here.
In fond remembrance of The Queen of Soul (1942-2018).
1) As befits one of America's premiere artists, Aretha Franklin sang at three Presidential inaugurations. The first was Jimmy Carter's in 1977, when she sang "God Bless America." What's your favorite patriotic song?
Oh, wow....I like a lot of patriotic songs. I guess God Bless the U.S.A....or Charlie Daniels' "In America."
* *I came back to do an edit after Diana's comment that she'd never heard "In America." Can't have that, so here's Charlie. (And honest...my liking the song isn't because he mentions Pittsburgh Steeler fans. Well, maybe a little.)
2) The daughter of a Baptist minister, Aretha grew up with church music. She told Rolling Stone one of her favorite songs was the hymn, "Victory Is Mine." What's your favorite religious song?
How Great Thou Art. There is something about it that literally causes me to break out in goosebumps from the first note to the last.
For something a little more contemporary, I love Glorious Day by Casting Crowns. Truth be told...I like all of their songs.
3) She welled up a bit when President George H. W. Bush presented her with the nation's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005. When is the last time you shed a tear?
Watching Woodlawn on Fridayl I can't believe it's taken me so many years to get around to watching it.
4) In 1980, the Queen of Soul sang for the Queen of England in a Command Performance at The Royal Albert Hall. Have you ever been to London?
Nope.
5) Since Aretha had many honorary degrees, it would have been appropriate to refer to her as Dr. Franklin. Who is the last person you referred to by his or her title (Officer, Father, Sgt., Dr., etc.)?
I guess it would have been my dentist this week since I saw him twice.
6) In this week's song, Aretha tells her lover that it doesn't take a high IQ to understand what's going on in their relationship. Do you know your IQ?
No.
7) A sculpture of Aretha is on display at Madame Tussaud's in New York. Do you think wax museums are cool, or creepy?
Kinda cool, but a little bit creepy. They had a display at the one on the Canadian side of Niagara fall a few years back about prison electrocutions. There was a button on the wall you could push and the lights would flicker, the "electricity" would hum, and the guy in the chair would really twitch. That one gave me the creeps!
8) Aretha and Motown legend Smokey Robinson were literally lifelong friends, since they were playground buddies in Detroit. Smokey is one of the only people who can claim to have seen The Queen of Soul with a bucket in a sandbox. If we went to the playground today, would you head for the swings, the slide or the jungle gym? Or, like Aretha, would you play in the sand?
I'd probably start on the jungle gym and then finish up in the sandbox.
9) Random question: Do you like pumpkin seeds?
I do. We always saved the seeds when we carved pumpkins and I'd roast them. I made a couple of different flavors.
That's all for today. See you tomorrow (I hope, as I'm keeping Colton overnight) for Sunday Stealing!
I don't think that I ever heard Charlie Daniels In America.
ReplyDeleteI went back and plugged in a video of it, if you're curious.
DeleteWhenever I hear "How Great Thou Art" in my head, it's in Elvis' voice. He did such a beautiful job on that. That recording is the ONLY Grammy he ever won and it was one of the last songs he ever performed, which I find touching. When people are low and suffering, music can be so uplifting.
ReplyDeleteSo far this morning, you're our most lively playground participant.
I like that version, too, and it was infact the choice right after Anthem Lights. I debated, but decided to choose something different.
DeleteI'm kind of an all over the playground kind of girl. ;) I was a tomboy growing up so if I was on the swings I was probably standing up on them, seeing how high I could go, or jumping off at the high point.
Yes...to what Gal said above...Elvis did a version of How Great Thou Art that literally makes me cry every single time! He just has a way with music. It is my favorite song too. More contemporary for me would be Hillsong United music. I love Anthem Lights too!
ReplyDeleteLoved your answers! Have a great weekend!
He was the king. Hillsong is okay, but not one of my favorites, but hey...life would be very boring if we all liked the same things. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
DeleteI love How Great Thou Art and feel the same way. Oh Glorious Day is one of my very favorites, too. As I said, I have so many favorite religious songs, it's hard to choose. How creepy to watch an electrocution even if it is wax. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteHow Great Thou Art is my favorite, but after that I had a hard time narrowing it down. I like everything Casting Crowns does so I tried to pick a favorite of theirs.
DeleteYes, it was CREEPY! Down in the basement and decorated to look like a dungeon...all the displays were criminals or monsters and we were the only ones down there. It really kind of freaked me out.
Thanks for the links to the songs! :)
ReplyDeleteWax museums are creepy--but compelling!
They are fun in a weird sort of way. I like the Ripley's Believe It, Or Not museums better.
DeleteI love the CDB! Wow. I could watch that video over and over! Never having been to one, I can't comment about wax museums. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't 'get' the appeal.
ReplyDelete'Hope you and Colton have a great time tonight!
I'm a CDB fan, too. He was HUGE when I was growing up...probably thanks to the whole Urban Cowboy thing happening. Kids who never listened to country before were suddenly into it. Megan's first boyfriend's sister handled events at a local ski resort and when Charlie came she got them in to meet him. She had his autograph on something of his, but she lost it or got rid of it or something.
DeleteHow Great Thou Art is another favorite of mine. Good answers!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, and your pick is another favorite of mine!
DeleteTwo trips to the dentist in one weeks sounds very dire. I hope it was nothing serious.
ReplyDeleteI agree that those wax museums are both cool and creepy.
ReplyDeleteI just paid a bill this morning from a dentist visit in July. I'm wondering why I am paying for insurance now.
I liked your song choices. But I have to agree about Elvis.. ;o)
ReplyDeleteHope you don't have to see the dentist again til next year sometime!
