Even though my first day at the new job was pretty boring...lots of films and talking about fun topics like fire drills, blood born pathogens, hepatitis, resident rights, abuse, safety, etc....I'm happy to finally be getting started. I'm happy that everyone I've met seems so nice and genuinely happy in their job. I'm happy it seems like a very positive work environment. I believe that has something to do with the fact that organization is faith-based, affiliated with the Hungarian Reformed Church (and yes, they celebrate that heritage and now and then you will hear folks speaking Hungarian). It is a huge, sprawling modern facility where concern for the residents' rights, dignity, and care reign supreme. I'm happy to be affiliated with such a place.
Today I will finish up my orientation and then start my training. I can't wait for that. One little blip in all of it...that tooth I had the root canal done on last week. Yesterday as I finished lunch my tongue brushed up against something that didn't feel quite right. Further probing revealed that while the filling the dentist put in the tooth is still there, the entire back of my tooth broke off! It doesn't hurt, but there's a sharp edge that is constantly rubbing the side of my tongue and making it very sore. The office is closed today so I back tomorrow afternoon...which meant I already had to ask to leave work early. I hate starting off on that foot.
But tooth aside, I'm happy, happy, happy!
OH MAN... it always seems to work like that doesnt it? Hence, me having TWO ER surgeries in my first months here too. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they understand.
I love you're in a faith based organization. That's always been a dream of mine!
Good luck on your training!
Yes, you sure did get hit right when you started your job. Thank goodness YOU had understanding employers! The faith based bit is pretty cool. I found out today that one of the activities I'll be leading them in (they do it every day) is prayer and devotions.
DeleteUgh … I feel your pain re. orientation. At my last job we had (to endure) monthly OSHA training on everything from PPE to Blood-borne Pathogens, ladder safety etc. Sending you a badge for staying awake!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Lots and lots of training to get through since I'll mostly be in the dementia wing. There is so much more to my job in that wing than leading activities. My head's swimming! But yeah, I hear there are monthly classes on some things, quarterly classes on others, and we have to redo the HIPAA security thing every year.
DeleteOh man, tooth troubles are awful and I'm sure your new employer understands! Keep us posted as you progress through your training! It sure sounds like a wonderful place to work and will allow you to make a difference in lots of lives!
ReplyDeleteIt really is a nice place. They are celebrating employee appreciation week right now. I don't know what they are doing every day, but yesterday they were supposed to wear goofy hats and they had walking tacos for us at lunch. Today there was a catered picnic at corporate headquarters (I couldn't really enjoy it...stupid tooth). I met some of the residents today. They are so sweet, even the grumpy ones. I was surprised to find the first resident I met was someone I knew.
DeleteHooray for your new job! :D
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your new chapter.
