An Obsolete Hodgepodge

This morning finds me linking up with Joyce @ From This Side of the Pond for the Wednesday Hodgepodge. Please click the link or the logo above to visit Joyce and find the rules to play along as well as links to the other players.

Here we go!

1.Describe your 30's in one sentence. If you're not yet 30 tell us one thing you hope to accomplish once you hit that particular decade.  It was a decade of great extremes...great joy and great pain.

2. Is it harder for you to exercise or eat healthy?  It's definitely harder to exercise. I have arthritis in my ankles and feet and it's painful to do too much walking any kind of exercise that impacts them.

3. June 7th is National VCR Day. Huh? Anyway this reminded me of something I saw on Facebook listing household items we no longer have and the VCR was on it. I couldn't put my hands on that list, but found another list here of 21 items we all had ten years ago, but which are now obsolete-

bookshelves (WHAT!!???), drip coffee makers, alarm clocks, file cabinets, desktop computers, printers, printed phone books, answering machines, fax machines, paper shredders, a Rolodex, CD racks, CD burners, china cabinets, home phones, entertainment consoles, DVD players, calculators, takeout menus, incandescent light bulbs, and cable TV

Your thoughts? How many on the list do you still have? Still use?  Ha! By that list I'm old and obsolete. I still own and use bookshelves (I have many in the house), alarm clocks, file cabinets, printers, printed phone books, a CD burner (I had my son add it to the laptop), a china cabinet, a home phone, a DVD player, several calculators, takeout menus, incandescent bulbs (in some lights), and cable TV.  My guess is this list was created by people barely out of high school.

4. What's something you see disappearing in the next ten years?  Cameras. Most people just use their phones now and it's hard to get a printed photo of the grandkids...everything is digital and on the computer. In the future families won't have great-grandma's photo albums to look through. That's kind of sad.

5. How did you celebrate your birthday this past year? Is that typical?  I really don't remember. My husband probably took me out to dinner and yes, that's typical for most birthdays. We took a trip on my 50th and that was unusual.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  You don't want my own random thoughts at the moment. Our daughter and her husband are in the process of trying to jump through all the hoops to buy the house next door to us. They are supposed to close on the 18th, but there was some confusing calls from the loan company yesterday and now we are worried it is going to fall through because they deposited cash into their bank account rather than a check. It's all so confusing and frustrating and a little scary at this point, because they have to be moved out of their apartment by tomorrow. Praying they can get some clear answers today and that they are happy answers. Say a prayer for them, please?

  1. I will say a prayer now for the house situation. So stressful always when buying a house!! I do hope all works out and goes through as needed. How wonderful to have your daughter next door. I agree that list was definitely made by someone under 35 : )

    1. Thank you for the prayer! It will be wonderful to have her and her family (especially our grandson) next door.

  2. I just prayed for the house situation. Trusting God to work it all out.

I can't believe what all was on that list. Who knew I was so out of touch? lol

    1. Thanks, Cathy! I trust God, too, but I know there is power in prayer so the more who add theirs, the better.

Yes, if I didn't know that most everyone I know still uses at least most of the things on the list I'd feel ancient. Even a lot of young people I know still love their books and have bookshelves. My son and his wife are nearly as bad as me when it comes to collecting books.

  3. Unfortunately, your daughter's experience sounds similar to our own. Up to the 11th hour, I was an emotional mess. Definitely, I've said a prayer on their behalf.

I dunno; but I think there's something comforting about bookshelves. Mine's ratty, but I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon.

    1. At the rate this thing is going I think they may be a mess until the 11th and a half hour! Thanks so much for the prayers.

I agree about the bookshelves. They make a home cozy.

  4. Getting a house is a royal pain sometimes. I pray it all goes through without a hitch. I love our bookcases. Lots to pick from. Enjoyed your answers. It’s a nic way to get to know someone.

    1. That's for sure! I don't remember it being this big of a hassle when we bought ours, but someone told me the thing about not depositing large sums of cash has something to do with terrorism and homeland security, so definitely after our home buying days. What a world we live in! These memes are a fun way to get to know someone. Thanks for stopping by. :)

  5. Hi, Stacy! I'm so glad you stopped by my WordPress blog.
I see by your profile we have some things in common.
I am in my 50's and, I don't know about you but, the 60's are closing in fast.
We are working on becoming empty-nesters. We have 3 boys and one is moving out in August.
I used to have a plaque that had `Bloom where you are planted` written on it.
I have most of what is on that list and since I am a book reviewer I definitely need bookshelves. The more the merrier.

I didn't think I would ever go back to WordPress but with all the changes I really like it.

Thank you for dropping by from the Hodgepodge.

    1. I have a few years to go until I run into 60, but it's coming faster than I like to admit. Our nest is empty, though with our daughter (hopefully) moving in next door I have a feeling it will be nearly like having her back home. Do you review for a paper? online? Where could I read your reviews?

  6. I'm so sorry. Buying a house sometimes is a really big pain. By the way, your answer to number one perfectly described my thirties. Now, I think you are correct about the generation that made that list of the obsoletes. You are probably right about the cameras. I never use one, however, when I read others' blogs and see their gorgeous photos, I really wish I knew more about using our nice camera. But it's so much easier to use the phone or iPad. I hope your kids get in soon. My friends just moved out of a really big house and loaded up everything to move into an apartment yesterday only to discover it had flooded and they had to return with their truck and unload everything back into the empty house they left. At least they don't have a buyer coming in, thank goodness.

    1. Whew! What a day for your friends! I hope it's not going to be that "exciting" for our daughter. They are storing most things in her husband's parent's big garage and they'll stay at my mom's house until they close (still hoping that's what's going to happen). I had a big Nikon but let my daughter have it a few years ago when she was very interested in photography. I have a smaller camera, but find that these days I either use the phone or don't take pictures at all...which is strange after a lifetime of being the family photographer. Thanks for stopping by!

  7. I just bought a new camera. If I get ten years out of my camera I will be doing cart wheels.
If you fine the time stop in for a cup of coffee

    1. Isn't that the truth?! There was a time when you'd buy something and expect it to last a lifetime...or at least close. They really don't make things the way they used to. Either that or technology advances so quickly that whatever it is, it's obsolete.

  8. I hope everything works out with the house purchase and closing...that can be so stressful in the best of circumstances!

    1. It sure can be! We've still not heard anything further...good or bad, so things continue on. Today is move out of the old apartment day no matter what.

  9. I have three digital cameras and pics from my old SLRs still look better IMO. I have lots of photo albums. My kids keep all their pics on their phones.

    1. I guess everything is still a go, but what "games" they play with you leading up to closing. As far as I know they will close on the 18th.

  11. I think you might be right about cameras but I hope not. I'm in the process of trying to sort out photos plus print off some digital ones to create albums. We loved looking through old photos as kids and I want my grandkids to experience it too. Hope your daughter's house purchase goes okay. Must be very worrying for all concerned.
