Saturday 9: Mama Can't Buy You Love

Mama Can't Buy You Love (1979)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) This week's artist, Elton John, was made an Office of Arts and Letters -- one of France's highest honors for people who have contributed significantly to the arts. What's the most recent compliment you received?

I don't know....probably that dinner was good.

2) In 2013, Elton had to cancel an international concert tour because he had an appendectomy. Do you still have your appendix?

I do, but I don't have my gall bladder.

3) In 1979, Elton John was the first Western rock star to tour the Soviet Union. Would you like to visit Russia?

I'd like to see St. Petersburg, but other than that I don't have a burning desire to see it any more than any other place.

4) Elton and his mother hadn't spoken in years but he reached out to her and healed their beach in honor of her 90th birthday in 2015. Who is the oldest person you know?

Not very many old folks left in the family.  We've lost quite a few of the older generation in the last 10 years.  Both my Aunt Peg and the hubby's Aunt Peg died within about 6 months of each other and they were both just shy of their 90th birthdays.  My uncle passed a few weeks ago at 83.  I guess the oldest person left in my family or the hubby's is my stepdad and he's a mere 76.

5) Flowers and plants are popular on Mother's Day. How is your yard or garden? Is it green and/or blooming?

My yard is still a mess from taking out the pool last summer.  Sigh.  We've had tons of rain, though, so it's definitely green.  Unfortunately, it's mostly weeds.

6) Mother's Day is a big holiday for card shops. So are birthdays, weddings, and St. Patrick's Day. Hallmark sells greetings for everything from "Congratulations on Your New Job" to "Happy Retirement." Who received the most recent card you bought?

I sent a sympathy card to my aunt when the above mentioned uncle passed recently.

7) Sam's mother is very careful when she unwraps presents because she likes to save money by to reusing wrapping paper and gift bags. Tell us one way that you economize.

I don't save wrapping paper, but we've got gift bags in the family that have been going around for years.  I clip and use coupons.  A lot of what is in our home was found at an auction, flea market, yard sale or thrift shop.

8) Mother Winters used to scold Crazy Sam for leaving her dirty dishes in the sink. Sam admits it: as a grown up, she still leaves dirty dishes in the sink. How about you? Is your sink or dishwasher empty?

I put my dirty dishes in the dishwasher.  My husband does not.  He refuses on the grounds that I will just rearrange them anyway, so why bother.  He's not wrong.  There are dirties in the sink that can't go in the dishwasher.  I'm not great at washing them right away.

9) RANDOM QUESTION: What size mattress do you sleep on -- twin, full, queen or king?

We have a queen size Sleep Number bed.  I'm not sure they are all they are cracked up to be, but at the price....I'm going to sleep on the darn thing till I die.

  1. I missed the Saturday 9 but enjoyed reading your answers. We had a sleep number bed. Worst money we every spent. Ever. We kept it for about four years until we just couldn't stand it any longer. Ours was a King size.

    1. Sorry your Sleep Number bed was such a bad experience. Ours isn't THAT bad, but I do think they are seriously overpriced.

  2. My husband and I switched from a waterbed to a conventional bed in 1999, so our mattress is approaching 20 years old. We've thought about replacing with a sleep number (if we could even afford one), but based on you and Terri's thoughts, I'm not anxious to go that route.

It's funny, when we were kids, 76 seemed ancient. Now that we're in our 50's, it doesn't seem so old anymore. Old is over 90!!

Yes, weeds certainly have no problem growing!

I buy tons of cards in May. Besides Mother's Day, my father-in-law and both my parents have birthdays in May, as does a really good friend. My parents and in-laws have May anniversaries, as do a set of friends.

It was fun reading your answers to these questions.

    Have a great day,
    Patti

    1. The biggest complaint we seem to have is that while the two sides of the bed are supposed to be independent of each other it seems like the air moves between the two. And the remote seemed simple enough in the store, but not so much at home.

76? I remember as a kid discovering that I'd be 36 in the year 2000 and that seemed positively ancient!

    1. It's good to have longevity in the genes! The women in my family tend to live until their late 80s at least. Unfortunately, a lot of them didn't have their wits about them. I don't want to live that long if I'm going to be a prisoner of my own mind.

  4. I've always wondered why my sleep number would be ... Those folks are very good marketers.

    1. It's never what you thought it was going to be based on the bed they have you try at the store.

  5. Yes! My family has always passed around gift bags and boxes, too. We have Christmas boxes that my grandmother wrapped thirty years ago, that we're still passing around. Sort of a strange inheritance.

I enjoyed reading all your answers.
    Happy Saturday!

  6. I can relate to that pool problem. I have a big mud spot from a pool that we took out a few years ago. Now I have a new pool in a different spot. Good luck with that :)

thanks for letting me know about that comment thing. I was wondering why nobody was leaving me comments- except for you of course.

  7. I'm a second-hand furniture buff, too. Mom was, too. And now, the kids! We like it that way. And maybe you could sow wildflower for the wildlife in and among your weeds? Butterflies and birds will thank you. Go ahead and be a Rebel! You know you want to. 😎

  8. We looked at Sleep Number when we bought our last mattress, about six years ago now. We opted out because I'd read that they could mold on the inside and I am incredibly allergic to mold. Supposedly they have fixed the issue but I didn't want to take a chance with that kind of money. I am sorry you do not like yours.
