A Changing of the Guard

First of all, a big thank you to Katsumi for picking up the Wednesday Medley torch and carrying on the tradition...and also, a thank you to Terri for starting it and getting it going in the first place. You gals are terriffic!

Join in the fun here.

And now on with the Medley!

1. The first week of October is National Mystery Series Week. Do you sleuth alongside Nancy Drew or Miss Marple? Fan of Nero Wolfe?  I do like Nancy Drew, but never became a fan of Miss Marple or Nero Wolfe. These days I'm likely to read the Stephanie Plum series and a wide variety of cozy series...particularly ones set in Maine.

2. The first week of October is also National Chili Week. Do you plan on celebrating with a bowl of red? Have a top secret recipe to share?
We don't eat chili very often so we probably won't be having any this week and I sure don't have a secret recipe...or even an un-secret one. When I do make it I just browse recipes online or in my cookbooks for one that looks good at the moment.

3. October 2nd is National Name Your Car Day. Does your car or did a family car have a name?
I call my current car "Ruby" because when she is clean and the sun is shining she is the same sparkly red color as Dorothy's ruby slippers. The only other vehicle we've had with a name was one of my husband's trucks. It was a big, hulking thing with a lot of "quirks." I always referred to it as "The Blue Beast."

4. Today is also National Walk To School Day. Did you walk to school with your friends? Take a school bus? Ever have someone carry your books home from school?
We never lived anywhere that allowed me to walk to school. I rode with my mom the first couple of years because she was the librarian in the next school district over from where we lived and I went to school there. Then when I went to a private school, Mom had to drive me in to town to a central stop for most of the kids to catch a bus. In junior high and high school I went to public school and caught the bus with the rest of the kids in the neighborhood. And no, I don't think anyone ever carried my books home.

5. And it is National Pumpkin Seed Day. Do you like pumpkin seeds? Do you carve the pumpkin and roast the seeds? Do you buy packaged, prepared pumpkin seeds?
Or more of a pumpkin spice person?  We always used to roast the pumpkin seeds when our kids were at home, but I don't bother carving pumpkins these days and I'm not such a fan of the seed that I buy them. I'd much rather have something pumpkin spice!

6. Please tell us something interesting about your week.  Tim and I both finally got appointments with the new doctor we chose. Unfortunately, his appointment isn't until November and mine isn't until the end of this month. It's hard because they only allow one new patient appointment per day. Once we're in, it'll be a lot easier. We are hoping we can find some answers for both of us. Our previous doctor seemed to do nothing but send us for bloodwork and then nothing ever came of it.

Oh, and I already know I'm working all the holidays coming up, but I also know I have the weekends after Thanksgiving and Christmas off so I put in to have the Friday leading into each one off and it got approved! I've talked to everyone and they are fine with having our holidays a day or two late. So glad, because it's not much fun for me when we try to do it after I get off work.

And today is our son's 33rd birthday. How did that happen? Time really needs to slow down!

Happy Wednesday and I hope you all enjoy the rest of your week!

  1. Thank you for the kind words.

One great thing about working third shift is holiday scheduling although I do not have my husband or daughters yet so they might put a crimp in my style.

    1. You're welcome. I wondered if it was you taking over.
The husband and kids will put at least a mild crimp in your style.

  2. Over time especially, now, having to share the holidays with both sets of us in- laws, it really doesn't matter what day Christmas is. It is the day we say it is when we are all together! Im glad you got to make a longer weekend of it!!!After readling aobut your car I am wondering if it is that gorgeous candy apple red... I just love that color of car!!!

    1. Last year being the first year, I had a hard time adjusting to not being home for the holidays. Tim and the kids weren't thrilled, either. But this year I'm not so upset and the kids are actually looking forward to having Christmas at their home.

Ruby's not quite candy apple red, just a little darker. The glitter in the paint job only shows in bright sunlight.

  3. I don't know yet if I'll be working Thanksgiving this year or not. Time will tell. I've worked many, but it's been a few years since I've been in a position to have to work. However, this past year some things have changed and who knows?!?

    1. The way days off go, I might get Christmas off next year. Then again, maybe not.

    1. It was far too hot here for chili, too, but that's going to change tomorrow when a cold front goes through. Friday's high is to be 61!

  5. Happy birthday to your son! I'm sorry you are working the holidays again this year, but glad you do have the Fridays and the weekends off following. Whenever the family can gather makes the holiday. Glad everyone is okay doing it that way!

    1. Thanks, Terri! We are all beginning to adjust, I guess. It's just one of the "hazards" of woring in a mask.
