Wednesday Medley & The April Challenge

Hmm...it's pigs-in-a-blanket day. It cracks me up the things people think up to have a holiday for. I keep up with these things because I like to share them with the dementia residents at the home as conversation starters. They always get a kick out of it.
Well, joining in to celebrate the piggies with Terri @ Your Friend From Florida.

1.  Typically served as an hors d'oeuvre, have you ever made or had a Pig-in-a-Blanket?  I used to make them fairly often when the kids were growing up. They loved hotdogs stuffed with cheese and wrapped in crescent rolls. Throw in some fries and it's a fun kids' meal. Do you like Pigs-in-a-Blanket?  I do, actually. I still make them once in a while for Tim and I when I need something quick.
2.  Pigs-in-a-blanket are also known as devils on horseback, kilted sausages, and wiener winks. (Seriously.)  Please make up another name for this fun little appetizer!  I'm not making it up, but "wiener wraps." I seem to remember that for a little while a long time ago Pillsbury marketed "Wiener Wraps" in a can. I think they even came in flavors.
3.  In the UK, pigs-in-blankets are small sausages, or chipolatas wrapped up in bacon.  Which country's version is most appealing to your taste buds?  Ours. I've had both and I like the ones wrapped in doughy goodness better. Bacon on a hotdog is just too fatty and greasy for me.
4.  The first written record of pigs-in-a-blanket occurs in Betty Crocker's Cooking for Kids in 1957.  In this digital world, do you still have a favorite cookbook you use most of the time?  I use cookbooks all the time. In fact, I collect them.  Is there a recipe you can share with us from that cookbook? I don't have one handy, but one recipe I always go back to is the recipe for basic meatloaf in the Betty Crocker cookbook. I have been using it for years and my family likes it, while hating all other meatloaf. That recipe has even made meatloaf lovers out of some who've professed to hate meatloaf.
5.  What is your favorite cooking show on TV?  I don't really like to watch cooking shows, but the exception (not that it's strictly a cooking show) is Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. I would love to plan a driving trip around stops at restaurants that have been featured on the show.
6.  Tell us something random about your week, please!
Tim got his first pair of "real" glasses last night. I don't think he was thrilled, but the doctor told him and I kept reminding him that his eyes are going to have to get used to them and it may take a few days.
The State was at work this week because a resident fell last week and her daughter called and told them we were negligent. We passed with flying colors. The resident that fell is very independent and if she really wants to do something you aren't going to stop her. In the old days they'd have used restraints, but you can't do that now...they have the "right" to risky behavior. Personally, I don't understand how that is right in a dementia unit since those residents aren't thinking in their right mind.
I'm looking forward to my day off on Friday. A friend and I are heading to Monroeville for lunch and to check out a shoe store I heard about on TV. They sell all kinds of really good (i.e., expensive and well made) shoes, including Vionics. My friend already wears Vionic shoes and I keep looking at them, but with my troublesome feet I hate to spend the money they cost without trying them on. I'm hoping I can wear them because they have an awesome pair of dressy sandals that would be perfect for our cruise this summer.

Now, on to the April Challenge!

Day 24

A Motto To Live By:  There are two that I try to live by.

  1. Very surprising that people do not like meatloaf. To me it is delicious.

To paraphrase Marie Antoinette, former Queen of France, "Let them eat nutraloaf."

    1. I think it's because people are always sticking extra stuff in the meatloaf, that many don't like it.

  2. I don't know what Vionics are! Every day my facebook page pops up with Merino Shoes which they have almost convinced me I need!! I'm so glad you guys passed on the resident's claim. And it does take a while to get used to glasses. Happy Wednesday. Looking forward to a cruise is fun! Being on the cruise even more fun.

    1. Ha! Yes, if you look at something once online it will be in your Facebook ads until they catch you looking at something else.

  3. Happy that you passed the state investigation ... sad what happens when people get elderly. I give you so much credit for doing the job you do! Can't wait to hear all about the cruise!!! Both of those quotes are perfect! Note to self: be the sunshine!!! HUGS

    1. My faith really helps me be positive and those quotes are pretty reflective of how I believe I'm supposed to act. I hope they give you a boost, too.

  5. I've heard those shoes really are good - worth the money - but I'd be the same way - I want to see how they feel first before shelling out the dough.
I HATEEEE that period of getting used to glasses. Which is why, 3 months later, I still am not used to my bifocals - I just keep wearing my old lenses that are a one strength lens - haha

    1. My friend swears by the Vionics. She even shells out big bucks for their bedroom slippers. I've heard how great other shoes are and then run out and bought them and....nothing. I have to try them on before I'm spending that much. However, if they actually help with my foot pain I'd probably be willing to pay twice as much!

    1. Hey Jodi, I think I saw on someone else's blog that you have the same old red Betty Crocker cookbook they have. The meatloaf recipe is in there! The shoes are expensive, but I have a lot of foot pain so if a shoe really does help I'm willing to pay just about anything.

  7. We both picked Guy Fieri's "Diners"! Count me in on that road trip!
I remember my mother having to wear a 'seatbelt' while in her wheelchair. One afternoon I noticed it hanging; then, the big grin. "I escaped!", she crowed. You're so fortunate to have that sort of shoe store nearby. I've just discovered great buys on Thred-Up -- some 'new with tag' -- but can't risk ordering something uncomfortable.+

    1. Wouldn't that be a fun road trip???
I remember my grandmother being tied in a chair all day, too. That's what they used to do if the people were at risk of hurting themselves. I know that wasn't the best way, but I'm not convinced what we do now is, either. Seems there ought to be a happy medium in there.

  8. Have fun shoe shopping with your friend! I absolutely HATE shopping for shoes...unless it is tennis shoes because I am the same way, I have to try everything on and most shoes are not comfortable to me. Anyway, I hope the shoes work for you! Loved your answers! Have a nice week!

    1. I hear you on shoes not being comfortable. Most of the shoes with arch support don't even hit my arch right. I absolutely love the last pair of tennis shoes I bought. They were $150, but they fit and have amazing support and they're pretty. They're Brooks. Have you tried them yet?

  9. I love your two mottoes. Shoe shopping. No one carries my size except those stores with the really expensive brands. I hope you find what you want when you go shoe shopping on Friday! Keep us posted! Thanks for joining the Medley today! I enjoyed your answers and would love a copy of that meatloaf recipe!! :)

    1. I hate shoe shopping...and that makes me sad. I used to love shoes and always had a great collection of cute and sexy ones. Now it just depresses me to have to look for a good support shoe. At least they are starting to TRY to make some of them cute. Sigh. I'll try to message you the meatloaf recipe tomorrow before work.
