Calling All Parrot Heads!

Saturday 9: Boat Drinks (1979)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Jimmy Buffett is singing about his bandmates watching hockey in a sports bar. Since it's Super Bowl weekend, our first question is: In cold weather, which sport to you watch most: football, hockey, or basketball?

I played basketball in high school, but I hate to watch it.  Hockey's okay, but only live at the game.  I do like football, but I don't watch it too much these days. Still, it wins for most watched.

2) Jimmy sings it's just 20º outside. How high will the mercury reach where you are today?

Oh, right about there. We actually had a snow day here so no work for me. Well played, Phil. Well played.

3) "Boat drinks" are mixed drinks designed to enhance the enjoyment of a boat ride or time on the beach. Popular boat drinks include The Tequila Sunrise, Cuba Libre, and Mimosa. When did you last sip an alcoholic beverage? Was it a boat drink?

It's been a couple of weeks and no, it wasn't.  It was wine from my own private stash.

4) Jimmy met his wife, Jane, in Key West at a bar called The Chart Room. Have you ever been to Key West?

Nope, but it's on my short list of places I want to visit.

5) Have you ever met anyone worth knowing at a bar?

Can't say that I have.

6) While Keith Richard and Paul McCartney have made cameo appearances in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Jimmy Buffet has not. Producers have asked him, but he's always had to decline because of his touring schedule. Have you seen any of the Pirates/Jack Sparrow movies?

I've seen three of them, I think.  It's been a while.  I should watch them again. They are great fun.

7) When Jimmy gave the commencement address at the University of Miami, he showed up in flip-flops. How many pairs of flip-flops do you own?

Probably at least 5 or 6.

8) Jimmy has his own station on Sirius Radio. Do you subscribe to Sirius?

No. I got a few months for free when I bought my car, but we live in a mountainous area and reception was really spotty.

9) Random question: What trend or fad from your youth do you hope never makes a comeback?

Shoulder pads. I used to cut them out of most things.

That's all for this week. Thanks to Sam for being our hostess and coming up with the questions week after week. You do a great job!  Visit the Saturday 9 site to play along.

  1. I actually kid of liked shoulder pads, but the first time I washed an item, they bunched up and were never the same again.

    1. Oh, yes...there was that problem, too. The ones that were the most likable were the ones that you could wear or take out because they attached with velcro.

    1. Same here. I sit and watch them even when the grandkids aren't around. They crack me up.

  5. I have been only to two games in my life and I never made it through the whole game.
I went to a college hockey game but they kicked out the spectators when someone threw a full soda can at the ref and knocked him out. Then I went to a semi-pro baseball game and the home team got trounced and we left after the 7th inning.

    1. Yeah, hockey games can get pretty wild at times. Football games, too, for that matter. I've been to baseball games in Pittsburgh, too, though I really don't like watching the games. The stadium is beautiful with an amazing view of the city and the people watching is good. I took the whole family several years ago because the the team wasn't good, great tickets behind home plate were cheap at $26 each. I did it because Lynyrd Skynyrd did a concert after the game and concert tickets to see them elsewhere would have been at least double that.

  10. Sorry. I can't spell....*hangs Head*
Ha! Hello! FBI.. You are NEVER going to find Jimmy Hoffa's body.
I was a swimmer from the get go, and have the resulting broad shoulders from that. So, I looked like a line backer with them. So, I also took them out.

    1. The FBI should start with my husband. He has always talked in his sleep and when he was a kid his siblings used to have great fun with that. They once got him to confess that he killed Hoffa but he refused to tell them where the body was. They still tease him about that!

  11. I was sorta sad when shoulder pads went by the way. (Then again, I inherited my mom's bony 'upper.')

I've only seen one hockey game 'live' and didn't understand much of what was going on. Exciting, yes ... but I complained to Tom, they (players) are so darn RUDE to one another.

    1. I think I saw somewhere that shoulder pads are showing up in some things again. While I didn't like them much personally, I really disliked the look on anyone of those really big ones that extended beyond the shoulder and tended to make a person look like a big triangle.
